Spring 2021 Capsule Wardrobe

spring 2021 capsule wardrobe, minimalistic style, stay at home

Anyone else ready for spring??! The weather in Colorado can fluctuate between snow and 70 (sometimes within hours) so I included both colder weather items and the types of warmer weather clothing I am itching to wear. I normally wait to post the season’s capsule until the actual change of seasons, but I couldn’t wait until March 20th this year.

If you’ve been reading my capsule wardrobes from the past several seasons, you have likely noticed many repeats. I do tend to wear the same basics season after season. While pieces I purchase can be more expensive than other options, those are the items I’ve had and worn for years. If your budget allows, I recommend investing in pieces you will wear for years.

Each week in my newsletter, I feature a photo with pieces from my most recent capsule wardrobe. It’s a great way to get inspiration on how to mix and match these items. Recently I’ve been posting my daily outfits in the weekend roundup. I’m often wearing pieces from the capsule, which is another option for seeing how to pair these items in real life.

TOPS & DRESSES

This capsule has no shortage of tops and dresses for the range of spring weather in most climates. I cannot wait to feel that warm sun on my arms and legs!

ONE // Cashmere sweater: This is a last minute addition to my spring capsule. I own this sweater in four colors. While I like to transition away from sweaters in the spring, I have a feeling there will be days I still need to reach for them.

TWO // Striped shirts (Saint James, The Striped Sheep, Kule, Everlane): Striped shirts are a year round staple in my capsule wardrobe. I cannot wait to wear them this spring! I like to roll the sleeves once or twice (as seen in this photo). (Related post: A Comparison of the Best Striped Shirts)

THREE // Emerson Fry tee shirt: I like this tiger tee so much that I bought it in both black and white. I think the white will look great with light wash jeans this spring.

FOUR // Everlane cardigan: This cardigan has been a go to this winter and I plan on wearing it throughout spring layered over a white tee shirt and paired with any shade of jeans.

FIVE // Dudley Stephens Park Slope fleece: I bought my first Dudley Stephens fleece two years ago (navy Park Slope in Vello). I liked, but didn’t love, it. During a sale last fall, I bought another Park Slope, this time in the Terry fleece. The Terry fleece is slightly looser and I find it a lot more comfortable. So much so that I sold the other one.

SIX // Nap dress: Have you heard about the Hillhouse Nap Dress? It has a big following on Instagram. I tried one last year, but it was too see-through for the price. When they launched new colors this spring, I decided to give it a try again. The Ellie is the most popular style, but I bought and love the Nesli (you can wear this bra underneath it).

SEVEN // Gingham top: Tops like this one from J. Crew and Madewell are my go to shirts in the spring and summer. I love this one with white jeans and a denim jacket.

EIGHT // Striped tee: I also have a couple of short sleeve striped tee options from Everlane that I’ll wear throughout spring and summer.

NINE // Eyelet top: I have a small collection of eyelet tops I’ve purchased from J. Crew and Madewell over the past few years. They are great transitional pieces.

TEN // Shirt dress: Last summer I gravitated towards a shirt dress and wore a striped version almost every week. It’s so easy to throw on with sandals and a cute handbag. You can add a sweater or denim jacket for cooler mornings and evenings.

BOTTOMS

My spring capsule is heavy on denim. In the spring you can get away with wearing shades from black to white and everything in between.

ONE // Black Madewell jeans: These are a staple in the fall and winter, but can still be worn into spring. I like the raw hem and distressed knees.

TWO // Dark wash Madewell jeans: Madewell jeans can be hit or miss for me, but I have quickly fallen in love with these. They have the perfect amount of stretch. I prefer a raw hem and cut them at the length that I wanted.

THREE // Citizens of Humanity jeans: I bought a pair of light wash jeans last spring and proceeded to wear them all the time.

FOUR // Agolde shorts: I’m partial to a lighter, distressed denim short and have the Agolde Parker in swapmeet and riptide. The Agolde Dee shorts are slightly longer (and perhaps more appropriate for one approaching their mid-40s, ha!)

FIVE // White Madewell jeans (similar): I let worry about white jeans getting dirty stop me from reaching for them as often as I’d like. They make such a classic outfit.

SIX // Vuori joggers: These joggers are simply the best. Sign up for emails and get $20 off your first purchase. Go ahead and buy two pairs because you’ll definitely want another.

JACKETS

ONE // One/Third Blazers: My love of the One/Third jackets run deep. I own jacket 01 in both ivory and navy (the ivory is my favorite) and jacket 05 (bought on Poshmark, currently sold out but coming back soon). (Related post: My Go To Jacket)

TWO // Denim Jacket: It took me years to find a denim jacket that I love and actually reach for when it’s cooler. I like it most with black or white jeans. (Related post: comparison of Madewell and J. Crew denim jackets)

THREE // Fleece: I bought this fleece in early winter and have proceeded to wear it a ton. Sometimes inside the house when I’m chilly or outside on warmer days.

FOUR // Trench coat: This is the only item that I don’t personally own. A trench coat has been on my wish list off and on for 10 years. It’s a classic piece that truly doesn’t go out of style and is perfect for spring.

SHOES & ACCESSORIES

ONE // Veja V10 sneakers: I have fully embraced sneakers as my go to shoe for three seasons a year, including spring. The Veja are the most fashion forward sneakers I own. I also like the Everlane Court sneaker and the Frye Ivy sneaker

TWO // Birkenstock sandals: I’ve been wearing the Birkenstock Arizona sandals in copper for the past five years. I don’t leave home without them. After an estimated 800+ wears, they are finally ready to be replaced this spring.

THREE //Mules: I am partial to a pair of leopard shoes. They instantly add a pop to an otherwise neutral outfit.

FOUR // Loafers: Paired with skinny jeans and a sweater, these loafers bring a classic touch to any outfit. I got my first pair 7 years ago and they almost have a hole in the toe. I replaced them with a grey pair. (Sizing note: I go up a half size for a looser fit)

FIVE // Madewell tote and Parker Thatch strap: My everyday tote that works for all seasons. Full review here. I saw the striped crossbody strap on sale and ordered it as an alternative to the skinny strap sold with the tote.

SIX // Clare V crossbody and strap: My holiday gift to myself was this Clare V crossbody and strap. My Madewell tote is still my day to day bag, but I love the extra color this bag adds.
