Fall 2021 Capsule Wardrobe

Welcome to my fall 2021 capsule wardrobe! While I don’t follow a true capsule wardrobe, the majority of pieces I wear are those I reach for over and over again. I like to stick to a mostly neutral color palette. For me this means lots of black, white, grey, navy, and camel with a touch of burgundy and green. For fall 2021, I’ve been drawn to different shades of green from a lighter army fatigue to a deep forest green.

I’m not alone in being drawn to green this fall. I’ve seen quite a few people say the same – I haven’t had a chance to research it yet, but I’m very intrigued. What are we reading and watching to get the same message that green is the color for fall?!?

TOPS & DRESSES

Emerson Fry tee shirt: I like this tiger tee so much that I bought it in both black and white. I tend to wear the white more in the summer and the black more in winter. Excited to pair both of them with these brown corduroy pants.

Emerson Fry Shorty Short Sweatshirt – since it’s sweatshirt material, this is a great piece to transition to fall. I like how it looks with black or dark wash jeans. I like it so much I’m considering it in the washed black color as well. It’s a slightly elevated, extremely comfortable piece!

Striped shirts (Ayr, Saint James, The Striped Sheep, Kule, Everlane): A mix of short and long sleeved striped shirts are a year round staple in my capsule wardrobe. I cannot wait to break out my long sleeve options this fall! I like to roll the sleeves once or twice (as seen in this photo). (Related post: A Comparison of the Best Striped Shirts)

Graphic Sweatshirt: One of the items on my fall wishlist is a graphic sweatshirt. I’m deciding between a green Sezane, the Emerson Fry tiger, a Clare V, Ayr half-zip, or Alex Mill half-zip.

Cotton cardigan: While I loved my Everlane cardigan from last fall, there was something off about the way it looked on me. I sold it on Poshmark and replaced it with the Alex Mill button back cardigan that I’m excited to wear both ways this fall.

Sweater Blazer: I own the sweater blazer in black and camel. A sweater blazer is a great layering piece for cool mornings and nights. I found myself wearing it a ton last year.

Cashmere Sweater: I own this sweater in four colors. A gray, black and navy are neutral must have items in my fall and winter wardrobe.

BOTTOMS & DRESSES

Black Jeans: I searched high and low for black jeans and found this faded black pair from Madewell last year. They are one of the most comfortable pair of jeans I’ve ever owned.

Dark wash denim: I rotate between a pair of Madewell skinny jeans and straight-leg denim that I’ve had for years (these are similar).

Corduroy jeans: These are outside of my comfort zone, but I’m going to give them a try this fall. I’ve played around with them a bit and they look best with black and navy.

Agolde jeans: The newest addition to my denim collection is this pair of lighter wash distressed denim. I love the look of these jeans, but to be honest they are not my most comfortable.

Vuori joggers: These joggers are a year round staple for me, they are simply the best. Sign up for emails and get $20 off your first purchase. Go ahead and buy two pairs because you’ll definitely want another (I have 3 pairs and wear them all weekly in every season except summer).

Hill House Nap Dress: I am not huge into wearing dresses in the fall, but I’m going to give it a try. I plan to wear them with sneakers (or maybe clogs if I get really adventurous!) and a sweater. I wear one size smaller than my normal in this dress.

SHOES

Wow, this capsule is heavy on the shoes. Fall has such a wide range of temperatures in Colorado that I will wear sandals at the beginning and boots by the end. Mixed in are favorite sneakers, loafers I’ve worn for 5+ years and my beloved leopard mules.

Nisolo sandals: These have become an everyday staple in my summer wardrobe and I plan on wearing them right into fall with jeans and dresses. They are slightly dressier than my Birkenstock sandals and almost every bit as comfortable.

Birkenstock Arizona: I wear these as long as I can into fall/winter. The copper is my favorite color. I wear the narrow size, which is key so they don’t look too big and clunky on my foot.

Veja V10 sneakers: I have fully embraced sneakers as my go to shoe for three seasons out of the year. The Veja are the most fashion forward sneakers I own. I also like the Frye Ivy sneaker.

New Balance 327 Sneakers: For this fall I added another pair of sneakers into the rotation. I found these New Balance comfortable right out of the box and wore them walking Lawson to and from school this morning (2 miles) without any issues. Make sure to review the sizing guide – the pair I purchased and linked are listed in men’s sizes.

Loafers: Paired with skinny jeans and a sweater, these loafers bring a classic touch to any outfit. I got my first pair 6 years ago and they almost have a hole in the toe. I replaced them with a grey pair. (Sizing note: I go up a half size for a looser fit).

Mules: I am partial to a pair of leopard shoes. They instantly add a pop to an otherwise neutral outfit. I tried on a much more expensive pair last fall and found I liked these more. They are now 50% off. I wear a half size up.

Booties: Since fall spans so many temperatures, I’m sure I’ll be wearing ankle boots before the season is over. I’m searching for a new pair and right now these are the frontrunner.

JACKETS & BAGS & ACCESSORIES

Patterned blazer: Whether it’s plaid or herringbone, a patterned blazer is a great third piece to add to an outfit in the fall.

Tweed jacket: This has been a favorite jacket of mine for two years. I get the most wear out of it come fall.

Insulated Bomber: I am very excited to wear this bomber come cooler temperatures. I have the oregano color and have found it to be really versatile. My favorite way to wear it is with a white or striped tee shirt.

Denim Jacket: It took me years to find a denim jacket that I love and actually reach for when it’s cooler. (Related post: comparison of Madewell and J. Crew denim jackets)

Madewell tote: My everyday tote that works for all seasons. Full review here.

Clare V crossbody and strap: My holiday gift to myself last year was this Clare V crossbody and strap. It easily fits my phone, card case, lip gloss, and key with room to spare.

Scarf: Half the time I add a scarf for warmth and the other half is simply for style.
