A Letter to Lawson: You’re 3!

3 years old

A week ago (and the three days leading up to it) we celebrated Lawson’s turning 3 years old! We went on a mama and Lawson date, hosted a party complete with mini-cupcakes, spent the morning at the beach, painted at LACMA and ran down the hill at the Tar Pits. It truly was a perfect weekend and birthday.

Even on the hard days when I count down the minutes until bedtime, I am so very grateful to be Lawson’s mama. As he turned 3, I didn’t have any of the emotional tug at my heart of time going too fast. I didn’t feel the sadness I did on his past birthdays, but rather happiness of our bond and him growing into an awesome little boy.

So here’s what I’d like to say to my awesome little boy…

Dear Lawson James,

The past six months have been my favorite yet. Watching you grow from a toddler into a little boy brings me such joy.

Last October you had just started talking. Now you love to talk, ask questions, sing your ABCs. Your favorite word/phrase changes weekly. Lately when we ask you a question, your response is a very sweet “sure”. It is the cutest (but I’m pretty sure everything you say is the cutest)!

When asked who your best friend is, you answer Sybil without hesitation. And it’s true. You two are becoming friends. You love to play, run and wrestle together.

You have always been the most helpful little boy. You rarely hesitate to help pick up your toys and are willing to help me when I need it with a smile on your face.

Your daddy and I agree one of our favorite things about you is how emotional you’ve become. It’s one thing to hear you say “I love you” and seeing you feel that love is priceless. You wrap us in the biggest hugs. Your sister may be cuddly, but you give the best hugs and kisses, especially when I need it most.

I’m pretty sure your favorite food is chocolate and you would eat bacon with every meal if you could. Your favorite part of your birthday weekend was all the cupcakes! You don’t seem to have time for food. You’d rather be playing.

When I’m old(er) and grey(er), I HOPE I ALWAYS REMEMBER…

The way you say “yeah, let’s do that, let’s do that now”

The way you run after your sister saying “Sybie, Sybie”

The way you say “how this work?” for everything

The way you spell everything even words on a strangers shirt or a license plate.

The way you say “weeee” in the sweetest soft voice every time you go down the slide.

The way you are eager to clean up every night.

The way you wipe your face on your shirt.

The way you tentatively start playing with other kids at the park.

The way you say “one one” for eleven.

The way you do thumbs up when you’re happy. It often catches me off guard and makes me smile every time.

The way you say “fix my locks” instead of “fix my socks”

The way you get so excited to take your vitamins. (Who knew??)

The way you run and jump into our arms, your sister not far behind you.

The way you say “I’ve got an idea!” full of excitement.

HAPPY 3RD BIRTHDAY LAWSON JAMES! You are silly, adventurous, smart, playful and friendly. You are simply the best.

I love you, always and forever, no matter what.

Love,

Your mama
