I have not been this excited about the possibilities to style an article of clothing in a long time. I tried on the J. Crew Gwyneth slip skirt and immediately fell in love. I bought the black and am considering the navy as well.
Initially I was very hesitant about a silk-like slip skirt. After having two children I am typically self conscious of my mid-section. It turns out I feel completely amazing in it! The skirt is slimming and does not show cellulite dimples.
A quick note on sizing – I am wearing my normal size (XS). The skirt is a little tight to get over my hips, but once I do the fit is great. I’ve read other reviews that say to size down. I did not find that to be the case for me. I’ve also seen some people put the skirt on over their head. That absolutely did not work for me – I almost got stuck in it. My son had to help me out of the skirt, ha!
5 Ways to Wear a Slip Skirt
The slip skirt can be styled many different ways from casual to dressed up. I’ve styled the skirt 5 different ways to provide some inspiration. If you have holiday parties coming up, I could not recommend this skirt more!
I gravitated towards contrasting fabrics with the slip skirt to mix up the texture. A fleece turtleneck. A chunky knit sweater. A herringbone jacket. You can mix and match the shoes (sneakers/clogs/heels) with any of the tops.
Starting with a casual look, I paired the slip skirt with a hooded sweatshirt, sneakers (similar option) and a basket bag.
A slightly dressier, but still casual look. A go to fall favorite fleece turtleneck, leopard mules (similar looks here and here), and zip top tote. For styling this turtleneck, I tucked the front and back into my bra strap.
I couldn’t pass up wearing the slip skirt with a jacket (mine is no longer available, similar). This look comes to you courtesy of an $8 ribbed tank (thicker option), clogs (similar), and leopard clutch.
This sweater makes me excited for fall and winter weather. I forgot how incredibly soft it is. It’s like being wrapped in the coziest and warmest blanket. It is an absolute splurge ($$$$) even at the Black Friday sale price of 40% off. But, gosh another color is on my wish list.
Enough gushing about the sweater. Wearing the slip skirt with a cashmere sweater, strappy sandals (gifted), and leopard clutch (ignore my obnoxious Birkenstock tan lines) feels very luxe. I’m going out to dinner with friends tonight and will be wearing this outfit switching out the heels for sneakers (similar option). My life in the suburbs is not fancy enough for heels on a weeknight!
Last, but not least, is my favorite holiday party outfit of the styling session. This would also work for family photos! Here I’ve paired the slip skirt with an oversized black cashmere sweater (mine is very old, similar here, cotton version here), platform sandals (similar less expensive) and leopard clutch. A styling note about this outfit – I tucked the front and back of this sweater in my bra strap to create a waist.
