The past week we celebrated Lawson turned 4. My little luv that made me a mama is 4!
Last year when he turned 3, I wrote I didn’t have the emotional swings that often accompany your children’s birthdays. This year I definitely returned to the feelings of time spinning too fast.
I’ve thought about it a lot the past couple of weeks. Finally it dawned on me. It’s his hands. They are no longer chubby little baby hands. They aren’t even toddler hands. They are the hands of a little boy. Thankfully that little boy still wants to hold my hand.
As has become somewhat of a tradition around here, below is my letter to Lawson.
Lawson James Cole,
You are 4! Happy birthday buddy/sweetpea/munchkin/little luv!!
The last year was a big one. You gave up your pacifier (kicking and screaming), ditched diapers (at least during the day), moved from California to Colorado (the 3rd state you’ve lived in), started preschool and graduated from a crib to a big kid bed.
You learn something new every day. I love your curiosity. You want to know how things work and why they are the way they are.
Lawson, you are the best big brother. Sure, sometimes you get frustrated when Sybil ruins your Legos, but you’re always willing to help her. I know you will fiercely protect her when she needs it most.
Some days we keep track of all the nice things each of us do during the day. You always have the most written under your name. You are inherently helpful. I hope that never changes.
One of my greatest joys is seeing how much you like your teachers and classmates. Everyone is your friend. Playing at the park after school with your classmates is one of your favorite activities.
I’m certain you’ll use it against me someday, but you have the best memory. Sometimes it’s hard to know if you are listening. Then you’ll repeat something we talked about or did weeks and months earlier. It always amazes me.
You are the mayor of our neighborhood. You greet our neighbors by name and will rush out of the house to shout a hello.
I am proud of you, Lawson James. You are kind, curious, helpful, adventurous, smart and handsome. Thank you for being my favorite little boy in the whole wide world.
