A Pregnancy Story

A Pregnancy Story

It was early January. Lawson was about to turn 9 months old. I finally felt like I was getting my groove back. Even thought they didn’t fit quite the same, I could wear my old clothes again. I was training for a half marathon and had worked up to running 8 miles.

Then I realized my period was a week late. I didn’t think too much of it. I was about to quit breastfeeding and was running and eating healthier. I even said to Jim “let me preface this by saying I’m not pregnant, but something strange is going on.” The next night while he was putting Lawson to bed, I took a pregnancy test I had left over from last time. As soon as I saw the results, I was certain they confirmed that I wasn’t pregnant. The first line was so light and the second was very dark. And then I had a flashback to the last time I took this test. Maybe it was the same? I didn’t have the instructions and started to wonder if I had the lines right. I proceeded to spend the next 15 minutes googling test results with a growing suspicion I was pregnant.

Once Jim came downstairs, I started with “you might want to sit down for this” and he immediately knew I was pregnant. To my surprise, he was excited and happy from the start. Maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised, but we were just starting to figure out life with 1 child, much less add another one to the mix! There’s a part of me that wishes I would have waited to tell him and come up with something clever. There’s no way I could have kept the secret though. 15 minutes was hard enough!

The next day I headed to Walgreens to pick up a couple of other pregnancy tests, including the version that reads “Pregnant” or “Not Pregnant” so there wouldn’t be any confusion. I waited until the following day before taking it. As you know by now, the initial results were confirmed. It’s taken some time to get over the shock, but we’re excited to add to our family. Will a mini-van be next?!
