Although the official start of fall is still one week away, I’m getting a head start on sharing a fall capsule wardrobe today! I don’t follow a strict capsule wardrobe with a certain number of pieces, but I do have a curated closet with items that I love and wear frequently.
While I definitely have days when I wear leggings or joggers, if you follow me on Instragram you already know most days I put on a more traditional outfit. I feel more confident and am typically more productive.
I enjoy mixing and matching pieces from a capsule wardrobe to create different outfits. I share outfit inspiration in my weekly newsletters too. I hope they inspire you to combine pieces you might already own in a way you hadn’t thought about.
I linked the specific items that I own if they are available and included other options at different price points in the widget below.
TOPS & JACKETS
ONE // Cashmere Sweater: I own this sweater in four colors. A gray, black and navy are neutral must have items in my fall and winter wardrobe.
TWO // Striped Tee: It’s no secret I love a good striped shirt. Since we’re transitioning into cooler weather, I made room for both a short and long sleeve version on this list.
THREE // Sweater Blazer: I own the sweater blazer in both black and grey. The camel is probably my favorite color for versatility, but it does not look good with my skin tone. A sweater blazer is a great layering piece for cool mornings and nights.
FOUR // Eyelet Top (similar): I have a handful of flowy tops, including ivory and black eyelet options. They are my go to for a more dressed up style.
FIVE // Striped Shirt: You can’t go wrong with a classic white and navy. I also added a black and white shirt that I plan on wearing all fall and winter with my black jeans. (Related post: Comparison of Striped Shirts)
SIX // Fitted Blazer: My love of the One/Third jacket runs deep. It comes in both ivory and navy; the ivory is my favorite. It fits easily over my cashmere sweaters or a graphic tee. (Related post: My Go To Statement Blazer)
SEVEN // Denim Jacket: It took me years to find a denim jacket that I love and actually reach for when it’s cooler. I like it most with black or white jeans. (Related post: comparison of Madewell and J. Crew denim jackets)
EIGHT // Graphic Tee: A graphic tee is a 3 season option for me. This fall I plan to layer it under a sweater or fitted blazer with any of the jeans on this capsule wardrobe.
NINE // Army Fatigue Jacket (similar): I’ve owned this particular jacket for 6.5 years. Every year I’m reminded how versatile it is. The army green color goes with everything.
BOTTOMS
I only included jeans in my fall capsule wardrobe. I’ve never quite figured out how to wear booties with dresses. When the temperatures drop I almost exclusively wear jeans for the next six months. While I didn’t include them in the list below, these joggers will be in heavy rotation this fall.
TEN // Light Wash Jeans: While more of a spring/summer wash, I plan to wear light wash jeans into fall as well.
ELEVEN // Dark Wash Jeans (similar): A standard blue denim is a staple in my fall and winter wardrobe.
TWELVE // Black Jeans: I searched high and low for black jeans and found this faded black pair from Madewell last year. They are one of the most comfortable pair of jeans I’ve ever owned.
SHOES & ACCESSORIES
THIRTEEN // Tote: My everyday tote that works for all seasons.
FOURTEEN // Scarf: Half the time I add a scarf for warmth and the other half is simply for style.
FIFTEEN // Shearling Sandals: What happens when it’s too cool for my beloved Birkenstock sandals? I switch to the shearling option!
SIXTEEN // Mules: I am partial to a pair of leopard shoes. They instantly add a pop to an otherwise neutral outfit.
SEVENTEEN // Loafers: Paired with skinny jeans and a sweater, these loafers bring a classic touch to any outfit. I got my first pair 6 years ago and they almost have a hole in the toe. I replaced them with a grey pair. (Sizing note: I go up a half size for a looser fit)
EIGHTEEN // Sneakers: I reach for my white sneakers in the fall when it’s too chilly for slip on shoes, like mules or loafers.
