The Meaning Behind My First Tattoo

Tiny Tattoo

I’m a pretty risk averse person so the thought of a tattoo never really appealed to me. I couldn’t imagine something I’d want to have be a part of me forever. In my 30’s during a life crisis I started to consider the idea of a tiny tattoo, but didn’t know what I’d get. Then a couple of years ago, I finally settled on the idea of 3 tiny dots on my left wrist.

Jim and I have called each other luv since we started dating. Sometimes when we’d send each other messages, we’d use “…” instead of luv. I joked that I was going to get a tattoo of three small dots.

Then I got pregnant with Lawson and the three dots not only signified the original meaning of luv, but also our new family of three. One dot for each of us.

Enter another pregnancy and the meaning changed slightly again. Now the three dots represent my 3 luvs – Jim, Lawson and Sybil.

I waited until I finished breastfeeding Sybil and then when my parents were visiting, Jim and I snuck out to Shamrock Social Club. I told my mom where we were going, but didn’t tell anyone else. It felt like our secret for a few hours.

When Lawson finally noticed my tattoo the following day, he tried to rub off the dots. I told him one dot is for him, one for Sybil and the other for their daddy.

Sometimes I forget about my tattoo. I’ll catch a glance out of the corner of my eye and think I’ve got some kid food on my wrist. And then I remember, oh yeah, it’s my tattoo.

It’s been 2 months and I’ve never regretted it. It’s my first tiny tattoo, but it might not be my last.
