2020 Winter Capsule Wardrobe
While I don’t follow a true capsule wardrobe since I allow myself to wear whatever in my closet that I’d like, I do find myself gravitating towards the same items over and over.
This 21-piece winter capsule wardrobe is perfect for cold weather locations. It’s full of comfortable basics that can be mixed and matched.
Tops
ONE // Everlane cashmere sweaters: I own this sweater in four colors. A gray, black and navy are neutral must have items in my fall and winter wardrobe.
TWO // Striped shirts (Saint James, The Striped Sheep, Kule): Striped shirts are a year round staple in my capsule wardrobe. On warmer days, I wear them alone and on cooler days I wear them with a sweater or fleece.
THREE // Everlane cardigan: I’ve been really into layering this cardigan over a tee shirt or turtleneck. It gives an outfit some texture and dimension.
FOUR // Emerson Fry tee shirt: There aren’t many opportunities to wear a tee shirt during a Colorado winter so I included just one to layer on warmer days. This tiger tee is my go to graphic tee of the moment.
FIVE // Dudley Stephens Park Slope fleece: I bought my first Dudley Stephens fleece two years ago (navy Park Slope in Vello). I liked it, but didn’t love it. During a sale this fall, I bought another Park Slope, this time in the Terry fleece. The Terry fleece is slightly looser and I find it a lot more comfortable. So much so that I sold the other one.
SIX // Rebecca Minkoff sweatshirt: I’m all for comfortable and cozy in the winter. This sweatshirt is both and the puff sleeves give it extra style.
SEVEN // Tissue turtleneck: I have a few from different brands including J. Crew, Madewell and Everlane. My favorite are from J. Crew. They are thin enough to layer underneath another shirt and the neck isn’t too tight. I size up one size.
Bottoms
ONE // Black Madewell jeans: Once fall hits, these quickly become my most worn jeans. I like the raw hem and distressed knees.
TWO // Dark wash Madewell jeans: After wearing a hole in another pair of jeans, I went in search of a dark wash. Madewell jeans can be hit or miss for me, but I have quickly fallen in love with these. They have the perfect amount of stretch. I prefer a raw hem and cut them at the length that I wanted.
THREE // Vuori joggers: These joggers are simply the best. Sign up for emails and get $20 off your first purchase. Go ahead and buy two pairs because you’ll definitely want another.
Shoes
ONE // Veja V10 sneakers (also Everlane trainers): I have fully embraced sneakers as my go to shoe for almost every season. I prefer the look with no show socks, but in the winter I wear a fun pattern to keep my ankles warm.
TWO // Sorel Slimpack boots: I bought a pair of Sorels right before the first snowstorm the year we moved to Colorado. They are still a favorite for snowy and slushy days.
THREE // Ugg Classic boots: I’ve owned this particular pair of Uggs for 15 years. I almost donated them a few times when we lived in Arizona, but held onto them. I’m so glad I did. They are perfect for throwing on for walks around the neighborhood or quick errands.
FOUR // Stuart Weitzman 5050 boots: These boots are definitely an investment, but one that I’ve never regretted. They work for more casual outfits and dressier occasions.
Outerwear & Accessories
ONE // Banana Republic sherpa jacket: While our outings are limited, this sherpa jacket has quickly become my go to choice.
TWO // Cuyana scarf: Half the time I add a scarf for warmth and the other half is simply for style.
THREE // Nau puffer jacket: On the most casual days, I reach for my Nau puffer jacket (old, similar Patagonia puffer).
FOUR // Vuori sherpa jacket (also available at REI): Using a gift card from REI, I bought this sherpa jacket on a whim. I wear it most days – sometimes inside the house when I’m chilly or outside on warmer days.
FIVE // Lele Sadoughi face masks: My favorite face masks in wintery patterns. The plaid is my most worn. I’ve written about these face masks before – they fit a smaller face really well.
SIX // Madewell tote and Parker Thatch strap: My everyday tote that works for all seasons. Full review here. I saw the striped crossbody strap on sale and ordered it as an alternative to the skinny strap sold with the tote.
SEVEN // Clare V crossbody and strap: My holiday gift to myself is this Clare V crossbody and strap. My Madewell tote is still my day to day bag, but I love the extra color this bag adds. I envision wearing it out on date nights, whenever those become a reality again!
